Most marketing teams track metrics. Few track KPIs that actually drive business decisions.
The Difference Between Metrics and KPIs
- Metrics: Any number you can measure (clicks, impressions, CTR)
- KPIs: Metrics tied directly to business outcomes and strategy
A vanity metric feels good but doesn’t help you make decisions. A KPI tells you whether you’re moving the needle on what matters.
Business-Aligned KPIs
Start by asking: What does success look like for this channel?
For lead generation:
- Cost per qualified lead (not just lead volume)
- Lead to close rate (track pipeline impact)
- Customer acquisition cost (ultimate business metric)
For e-commerce:
- Revenue per ad spend (ROAS)
- Profit per ad spend (accounts for margins)
- Customer lifetime value (long-term health)
Tracking KPIs Effectively
- Define your KPI clearly before launching
- Set targets based on business needs
- Review weekly, adjust monthly
- Document what you’re learning
- Share KPIs with your team
Common KPI Mistakes
- Setting arbitrary targets without data
- Changing KPIs mid-month
- Tracking too many KPIs
- Not connecting KPIs to business goals
Start with one or two KPIs per channel. Master those before adding more.
